Eshe followed Queen Araminta

deep into the depths

of the dark and disquieting forest.

“I have kept this secret

for so many years,”

said the queen

as she marched forwards.

The forest closed in around them,

the trees pressing in

like a gathering crowd,

like a host of curious silent watchers.

Eshe felt like the trees were moving

into the spaces

where she wasn’t looking,

pressing in,

sidestepping into their footfalls,

becoming a room around them,

a box,

a coffin,

a suffocating skin.
